Online Gambling in New Jersey
The success of online gambling in New Jersey has prompted the state to pass legislation that would extend the authorization for online gambling by ten more years. Online gambling was initially introduced in the state in 2013 and was set to expire in November, prompting the need for an extension to ensure the continued operation of online gambling services and the protection of the interests of both providers and players.
The revenue generated from both online and offline gambling in New Jersey has been impressive, reaching $457 million for June. This figure represents a 14% increase from the same month the previous year, although it is still slightly below pre-pandemic levels.
The combination of both online and traditional gambling avenues has proven to be successful in New Jersey, according to James Plousis, Chair of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. He stated that gains in casino win, internet gaming win, and sports wagering revenue demonstrate the positive impact of blending online and traditional gaming.
The process of extending the authorization for online gambling is expected to proceed smoothly. Senator Vince Polistina, the bill sponsor, highlighted the importance of the original legislation in reviving the casino industry after the 2008 recession. He stated that online gambling and sports betting played a significant role in creating jobs and generating tax revenue for the state.
The ongoing success of online casinos has been particularly beneficial during the pandemic, according to Hilary Chebra, the manager of government relations for the Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey. The presence of online gaming websites has supported the casinos during challenging times.
Online Gambling in New Jersey
Online casino activity is currently legal in six states: New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. While land-based casinos are legal in more regions, online sports betting is expanding across multiple territories. The passing of this legislation is seen as crucial by Mark Giannantonio, president of the Resorts Casino Hotel and the Casino Association of New Jersey, as it provides investor confidence in New Jersey’s internet gaming industry and ensures the continued success of the state’s gaming industry.
